Long Island kitchens have always been more than just a place to cook. From the earliest settlers on the East End to today’s thoughtfully designed, custom spaces, the kitchen has reflected how Long Islanders live, work, gather, and celebrate. At Peconic Kitchen and Bath, we believe understanding the history of kitchens on Long Island helps us design spaces that feel timeless, personal, and deeply rooted in place. This is the story of how Long Island kitchens evolved and why the East End has always done things a little differently. Early Long Island Kitchens (1600s–1700s): Built for Survival The earliest kitchens on Long Island were practical by necessity. English settlers arriving in the 1600s built modest homes, often centered around a large hearth. On the East End, including areas like Southampton, East Hampton, Southold, and Shelter Island kitchens were typically the warmest room in the house and served multiple purposes. Cooking was done over open flames. Iron pots hung from cranes, bread was baked in brick ovens, and smoke filled the room. These kitchens were not decorative, they were essential. Families cooked, preserved food, made soap, and even gathered for warmth during harsh winters. Interestingly, many early Long Island homes placed the kitchen slightly apart from the main living space to reduce fire risk. Even then, homeowners were thinking about safety, function, and layout the earliest form of kitchen design. 18th–19th Century: The Farmhouse Kitchen Takes Shape As Long Island agriculture grew, especially on the North Fork and East End, kitchens became the heart of working farmhouses. Large wooden tables dominated the space, used for meal prep, eating, and family gatherings. Storage was simple: open shelves, freestanding cupboards, and pantries built into thick walls. This era introduced many design elements we still love today: Wide plank wood floors Handmade cabinetry Large farmhouse sinks Natural light as a priority On the East End, kitchens reflected the rhythms of the land and sea. Fishermen, farmers, and whalers needed durable, easy-to-clean spaces. The kitchen was no longer just about survival, it became a place of routine, family, and tradition. Early 1900s: Efficiency Meets Comfort By the early 20th century, Long Island kitchens began to change dramatically. Indoor plumbing, electricity, and gas stoves transformed how homes functioned. Kitchens moved fully indoors and became more organized. This period emphasized efficiency: Built-in cabinetry replaced freestanding furniture Countertops became standard Layouts were designed to save steps and time On Long Island, especially in growing towns and seaside communities, kitchens balanced practicality with charm. Many homes from this era still exist today, and we frequently remodel them- preserving original character while updating them for modern living. Post-War Long Island Kitchens (1940s–1960s): A New American Dream After World War II, Long Island experienced a housing boom. Kitchens became brighter, more colorful, and more optimistic. Think pastel tiles, metal cabinets, and cheerful linoleum floors. The kitchen was now a place for connection. Families gathered around breakfast tables, children did homework while parents cooked, and entertaining at home became more common. On the East End, kitchens retained a slightly more relaxed, coastal feel- favoring natural materials, open windows, and layouts that flowed easily into dining spaces. Late 20th Century: Kitchens Become the Centerpiece By the 1980s and 1990s, the kitchen officially became the heart of the home. Open-concept layouts gained popularity, especially in Long Island homes designed for entertaining. This era introduced: Kitchen islands Custom cabinetry High-end appliances Dedicated spaces for entertaining East End homeowners, in particular, embraced kitchens designed for hosting summer dinners, holidays, and long weekends with family and friends. Kitchens were no longer hidden; they were showcased. Today’s Long Island Kitchens: Personal, Timeless, and Thoughtful Modern kitchens on Long Island, especially on the East End, blend history with innovation. Homeowners want spaces that feel warm, inviting, and intentional. There’s a strong return to natural materials, handcrafted details, and layouts that encourage connection. Popular East End kitchen design features today include: Custom cabinetry Natural stone countertops Warm wood tones Open shelving mixed with closed storage Kitchens designed to age beautifully, not just trend well At Peconic Kitchen and Bath, we design kitchens that respect the past while embracing how families live today. Whether we’re restoring a historic home or building a completely new space, our goal is always the same: create a kitchen that feels like it belongs to the home, to the land, and to the people who live there. Why Long Island Kitchens Are Different Long Island kitchens are shaped by lifestyle. Proximity to the water, seasonal living, and generations of family gatherings influence every design choice. On the East End, kitchens aren’t just functional, they’re emotional spaces tied to memory, tradition, and hospitality. That’s why thoughtful design matters. If you’re considering a kitchen remodel on Long Island, especially on the East End, working with designers who understand local history, architecture, and lifestyle makes all the difference.

Avoid costly kitchen renovation mistakes with insights from NKBA designers. Learn what Long Island homeowners should know before starting a remodel. 5 Kitchen Design Mistakes NKBA Designers Help You Avoid A kitchen renovation is one of the biggest (and most exciting) investments you can make in your home — but it’s also one of the easiest places to make expensive mistakes. Most kitchen issues we see aren’t about color choices or cabinet styles. They come down to planning, spacing, and layout decisions that weren’t thought through early enough. That’s where NKBA design standards make a real difference. NKBA (National Kitchen & Bath Association) guidelines are designed to help kitchens work better, not just look good. Here are five common kitchen design mistakes we see — and how NKBA-guided design helps homeowners avoid them. Mistake #1: Poor Kitchen Workflow A kitchen can be beautiful and still feel frustrating to use. Poor workflow usually shows up as: Appliances that fight each other when opened Walkways that feel tight or awkward Too much foot traffic cutting through the work area Pinterest photos don’t show how a kitchen functions during real life — cooking, unloading groceries, hosting friends, or managing busy mornings. NKBA guidelines focus heavily on kitchen workflow , whether that’s a traditional work triangle or modern zone-based layouts. The goal is simple: fewer steps, better flow, and a kitchen that feels natural to move through. 👉 This is one of the biggest reasons homeowners benefit from working with an NKBA-affiliated designer rather than designing on the fly. Mistake #2: Incorrect Clearances and Spacing This is one of the most common — and costly — mistakes. We regularly see kitchens where: There isn’t enough room between an island and cabinets Appliance doors hit each other Walkways feel cramped once the kitchen is actually in use These issues don’t always show up on paper, but they become very real once the kitchen is built. NKBA standards clearly outline minimum spacing and clearance guidelines to ensure kitchens are comfortable, safe, and functional. Getting this right upfront helps prevent daily annoyances — and expensive changes later. Mistake #3: Bad Appliance Placement Appliance placement is about more than lining things up neatly. Common appliance mistakes include: Dishwashers placed too far from sinks Refrigerators blocking walkways when opened Wall ovens installed at uncomfortable heights NKBA designers plan appliance locations around ergonomics, safety, and ease of use , not just appearance. That means less bending, fewer collisions, and a kitchen that feels easier to live in every day. Mistake #4: Not Enough (or the Wrong) Storage It’s not just about having storage — it’s about having the right storage. We often see kitchens with: Deep cabinets that are hard to access Too few drawers where they matter most No plan for pantry or specialty storage This is especially important in Long Island homes , where space can be limited and every inch needs to work harder. A professional kitchen designer plans storage intentionally — using drawer systems, vertical storage, and customized solutions that match how you actually use your kitchen. Mistake #5: Designing Only for Today Trends come and go, but your kitchen needs to last. One of the biggest long-term mistakes is designing a kitchen that only works for how you live right now. NKBA standards consider: Long-term comfort Aging-in-place considerations Accessibility and ease of use Future resale value Designing with the future in mind doesn’t mean sacrificing style — it means creating a kitchen that continues to feel good years down the road. Why NKBA Design Standards Matter Most kitchen renovation regrets aren’t about finishes — they’re about function. Working with a designer who follows NKBA standards helps eliminate guesswork, reduce costly mistakes, and create a kitchen that works beautifully for everyday life. If you’re planning a kitchen renovation on Long Island, understanding how NKBA-guided design works is a smart first step. 👉 Related Reading: Why NKBA Membership Matters on Long Island (And What It Means for Peconic Kitchen & Bath) Peconic Kitchen & Bath proudly serves Long Island homeowners with thoughtful, functional kitchen design rooted in NKBA standards, experience, and care. What Is the NKBA? The National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) is the leading professional organization for kitchen and bathroom design specialists across North America. Membership is earned and maintained through: Ongoing professional education Adherence to a strict code of ethics Staying current with national design standards and best practices Commitment to consumer safety, functionality, and professionalism In short: NKBA members are held to a higher standard than the average designer or contractor . What It’s Really Like Being an NKBA Member NKBA membership is active — not passive. For designers like Vincent Pence, it means: Continual training on evolving design standards Staying current with building codes and safety guidelines Designing layouts based on function, flow, and ergonomics — not just aesthetics Understanding new materials, appliances, and sustainable practices Every clearance, cabinet height, appliance placement, and workflow decision is informed by nationally recognized NKBA guidelines. That results in kitchens and bathrooms that are: Safer More functional Built for daily life Designed to age well over time Why NKBA Membership Matters Specifically on Long Island Long Island homes come with challenges that demand real expertise: Older housing stock with unconventional layouts Coastal conditions that impact materials and construction Strict local building and permitting requirements High property values where mistakes are costly An NKBA member understands how to balance design creativity with technical precision — a critical skill for Long Island renovations where shortcuts lead to long-term problems. Being an NKBA member on Long Island also means staying connected to: Regional construction practices Local design trends Evolving zoning and code requirements This blend of national standards and local experience is what separates true design professionals from one-size-fits-all remodelers. Style and Functionality, Combined in One Place – Transform Your Space Now At Peconic Kitchen & Bath, we understand that a modern kitchen should prioritize convenience, functionality, and style. To achieve this, it is crucial to organize your kitchen cabinets effectively. While it may appear daunting, with careful planning, it can greatly enhance your kitchen’s efficiency. To keep your cabinets organized, we recommend utilizing drawer inserts. They provide designated spots for each item, ensuring your utensils stay in order and granting you easy access during cooking. Additionally, incorporating pull-out shelves into your cabinets is a smart way to optimize space. These shelves increase storage capacity and make retrieving items from the back effortless. Furthermore, our sliding baskets offer valuable extra storage. Particularly useful for bulky items like pots and pans, these baskets can save you time and effort when preparing meals. By implementing these tips and tricks, you will be amazed at the organized and efficient room transformation while creating your modern kitchen. Keep Kitchen Stylish and Functional with Professional Care Peconic Kitchen & Bath believes that modern kitchen cabinets are an essential addition to any home, providing both style and functionality. However, taking proper care and maintenance is vital to ensure their longevity. We recommend following these guidelines: Regularly clean the cabinets using a mild soap and water solution. It is crucial to promptly empty wood cabinets and dry them to prevent moisture buildup. Avoid using abrasive or oil-based cleaners, as they can cause damage or discoloration to natural wood or metal cabinet surfaces. Treat flat surfaces of the cabinets with care to prevent any slamming or scratching incidents. Routinely inspect the locking mechanisms to ensure proper functioning, reducing the chances of any malfunction. By following these simple tips, you can keep your Peconic Kitchen & Bath modern cabinets in pristine condition for an extended period of time. Alabaster Travertine Bathroom

Peconic Kitchen & Bath Featured in 27 East: A Bathroom That Balances Art, History & Modern Design We’re proud to share that one of our recent projects was featured in 27 East’s article, “Artist Oz van Roen Fuses History and Modernism at the MOZ Home.” The feature highlights the unique architectural and artistic vision behind the residence — where past and present meet beautifully. (Read the article here: 27 East feature ) Our Contribution: The Bathroom Remodel Our team at Peconic Kitchen & Bath was entrusted with designing and remodeling the bathroom in this remarkable home. The challenge was to create a space that reflected Oz van Roen’s artistic philosophy — a blend of historic depth and contemporary refinement. To achieve this, we chose alabaster travertine as the primary material. This stone offers the perfect marriage of texture and light: Its natural veining and subtle warmth nod to history and craftsmanship. Its creamy alabaster tone brightens the space, adding a refined, modern feel. The clean lines, precision installation, and minimalist detailing allow the material itself to take center stage — timeless, elegant, and serene. Design Vision The bathroom was designed as both a retreat and a reflection — a quiet counterpoint to the home’s dynamic artistic expression. By pairing the tactile richness of travertine with modern fixtures and lighting, we created a balanced space that feels warm yet contemporary, luxurious yet grounded. “We wanted the materials to speak for themselves. The alabaster travertine set the tone — natural, luminous, and timeless,” — Peconic Kitchen & Bath Design Team Why This Matters When an article like 27 East’s feature highlights a home that’s doing something special, it validates the idea that design doesn’t have to be either historic or contemporary — it can be both. And in our bathroom remodel, we aimed to live out that idea. Our client wanted a space that feels timeless yet fresh, rooted in tradition yet fully modern in execution. The alabaster travertine allowed that dual identity to shine. What We’re Proud Of Achieving a material selection that complements the artful architecture of the home. Ensuring precision installation so the stone lives up to its potential — consistent veining, flush joints, well-integrated lighting. Creating a bathroom that doesn’t just “match” the house, but elevates it — a place where someone enters and feels calm, elevated, and at home. Being part of a home that’s featured in a leading regional design publication — this gives our team, and our clients, added confidence that we’re operating at a high level of craftsmanship and aesthetic thinking. A Thank You to 27 East We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to 27 East for featuring this project and showcasing a snippet of our work in their beautiful piece on the MOZ Home. It’s always an honor to see our craftsmanship recognized alongside visionary architecture and art. Looking Ahead At Peconic Kitchen & Bath, we specialize in designing kitchens and bathrooms that balance luxury, craft, and story.
